The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 3 million members and online supporters. Since 1970, our lawyers, scientists, and other environmental specialists have worked to protect the world's natural resources, public health, and the environment. For over two decades, the NRDC has worked in China as a thought leader and trusted adviser to our partners. With a highly effective team of more than 40 members based in our Beijing office, we have worked hard at both the national and local levels to recommend, develop, and support the implementation of innovative laws, policies, technologies, and market tools that curb pollution and accelerate China’s transition to a clean, low-carbon economy. NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China in accordance with applicable laws.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Energy Transition Project Power Sector Manager, the Consultant shall perform the assigned tasks on the power projects, but also help with other work as needed.
The Consultant position will be for an initial term of 6 months, with the potential to extend based on program needs. The Consultant must be working in the office at least 3 days per week (7 hours per day with 1 hour unpaid lunch break).
Responsibilities
The Power Consultant will work with partners to prepare research proposals, budgets, contracts and compliance materials; organize expert review meetings and provide expert feedback and guidance to partners to improve research; and assist with reporting on the progress of projects and trends in the power sector.
The Consultant will manage research cooperation and engagement with Chinese partners on low-carbon transition policies in the power sector, including but not limited to the development of renewable energy, transition of thermal power plants, and electricity market mechanisms.
The Consultant will also analyze energy and power transition policies and technologies in China and internationally, prepare research reports and communications on research findings and recommendations, and help develop strategies for promoting a low-carbon power system in China.
The Consultant may also support work on decarbonization in other key energy and industry sectors as needed.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in energy, environmental policy, science or engineering, energy economics or a related field, or 3-5 years of working experience in a related field or organization.
Ideally, experience working on low-carbon transition in the energy/power sector.
Excellent research and writing skills in both Mandarin and English.
Broad knowledge of power, environmental, and climate change policy in China and abroad, and experience in researching and writing on environmental/energy policy.
Experience and ability to work cooperatively with stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, universities, companies, and NGOs. Strong interpersonal skills and a team player.
