With a highly effective team of 40 based in our Beijing office, the NRDC China Program has worked hard at both the national and local levels to recommend, develop, and help implement innovative laws, policies, technologies, and market tools that curb pollution and accelerate China's transition to a clean, low-carbon economy. NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the State Forestry Administration of China. NRDC's Oceans Program works to revive the world's oceans by promoting the protection of important places and species, fighting destructive practices, and advancing smart ocean planning.  As part of this work, NRDC promotes sustainable management of ocean fisheries and protection of the habitat and ecosystems on which these fisheries rely. 

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a China Fisheries Science Fellow to work in our Beijing office to support the strengthening of China's domestic ocean fisheries management. Supporting more robust fisheries within the nation's domestic waters will help achieve food security goals and promote ocean health. This will be a full-time contract position for a period of 1 to 2 years based in Beijing and jointly supervised by NRDC's China Program and its U.S.-based Oceans Program. The China Fisheries Science Fellow will work directly with NRDC's full-time fisheries policy analyst in our Beijing office and remotely with a team of fisheries policy experts in NRDC's New York office.

The China Fisheries Science Fellow's work will include supporting the implementation of pilot Total Allowable Catch projects in two or more provinces and helping to analyze different approaches for integrating scientific and technical information into fisheries management. The work will involve research and work with key officials, academic institutions, scientists and non-governmental organizations. The fellowship presents an excellent opportunity to refine existing skills and build new ones, learn about other countries' fisheries policies, and develop professional relationships with fisheries experts in China and abroad. 

Main Responsibilities:

Develop a knowledge of best practices in fisheries science and management to facilitate information exchange between fisheries experts in China and other countries;

Develop expertise on China's domestic fishery management system and approaches to strengthening that system;

Provide technical support to the Total Allowable Catch pilots, including on issues concerning catch monitoring, observers and enforcement;

Build relationships with government and academic fisheries experts in China and elsewhere;

Research and write reports on issues related to fisheries science and management; 

Write fact sheets and other materials in Chinese; and 

Translate important documents related to fisheries science or management from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese, as needed. 

Qualifications:

Ph.D., or a Master with experience, in a relevant field such as fisheries science or management, ecology or natural resource management; 

Track record of conservation interest and/or work;

Knowledge of marine fisheries science or policy a plus;

Strong research and writing skills;

Fluency in both Chinese and English, with excellent English oral and written skills; 

Excellent public speaking skills; 

Positive work attitude;

Ability to work well with others including on an interdisciplinary team as well as independently;

Flexibility in taking international calls at odd hours.
