Coal gasification manufacturing is intensive in energy and water consumption as well as in its carbon dioxide emissions, rendering itself fairly controversial in China. Furthermore, coal gasification is uncertain in a host of aspects including: required investment, technologies, associated environmental costs as well as its dependence on future market conditions. This study provided a glance on the failures of the coal gasification project in the Great Plains in the United States, which became bankrupt a year after entry into commercial operations, and for which the U.S. government and taxpayers sustained financial losses in the project.
