Heavy industry plays a dominant role in the economic development of Inner Mongolia and is also the main driver of coal consumption. This study selects cities with relatively developed heavy industries as research subjects – Hohhot, Baotou, and Wuhai. The research sorts out the status quo and problems of the cities’ coal consumption, air pollutant emissions, and air quality. It analyzes the correlation between coal consumption and air pollution and puts forward policy recommendations that provide a reference for other cities in Inner Mongolia as well as similar regions and cities in northern China for air pollution prevention and control.
