The electric power system confronts the challenges with peak load on the grid whenever storms or heat waves hit. Building new power plants in response to peak demand comes at high price tags, both financially and environmentally. Demand response deal with seasonal and temporary demand peaks, similar to the purpose of conventional load control and orderly power consumption programs in China. Yet, demand response differs itself with voluntary consumer participation and the support of market mechanisms. This factsheet introduces the concept of demand response and experiences abroad.
