Pathways for Transitioning from Coal Power in Representative Chinese Provinces

2021-12

Based on a decision-making tool for coal power transition developed by NRDC and partners, this report identifies a pathway to optimize the existing coal power fleet in six typical Chinese provinces (Jilin, Shanxi, Gansu, Shandong, Hubei and Jiangsu), considering their geographical location, available resources, as well as current and future electricity demand. It then provides estimates on the potential of main technical solutions, including retrofitting, replacement, and phasing out, and tailored policy recommendations on decarbonizing the power sector for each province.
