Expert discussion led by Li Lili @China EV 100
While China is promoting battery electric vehicles (EVs) as an integral part of China’s energy storage system to support renewable energy ramp-up, ensuring sustained vehicle-grid integration (VGI) in a way that benefits EV drivers, the power grid, and the broader low-carbon transition remains a key challenge. To address this issue, NRDC and China EV100 launched the inaugural EV-Grid Synergy Salon in Shanghai on April 24. The salon focused on exploring feasible business models and assessing the techno-economic viability of VGI, convening experts from grid companies, EV manufacturers, charging operators, and local governments to share their insights. The participants emphasized that VGI, particularly V2G technology, could offer a cost-effective alternative to stationary energy storage to enhance power system flexibility; however, successful VGI commercial models hinge on effective pricing and power market mechanisms, as well as clear subsidies and technical standards to enable V2G and managed charging. The participants also called for advancements in technology, improvements to grid infrastructure, and local pilot demonstrations to fully unlock the potential of VGI. The salon series, together with our Vehicle-Grid Roundtable, aims to establish a comprehensive dialogue mechanism to enable synergistic decarbonization of transportation, power, and other sectors.
