Kai Duan speaking at the panel @NRDC

Inner Mongolia and Shanxi are the most important energy producers in China, and their transition pathways are crucial for China to meet climate goals. NRDC experts and partners shared research findings on the transition in the two regions with practitioners from other provinces at 2024 Green & Low-Carbon Think Tank Partnership Annual Conference on April 22. Kai Duan, Energy Transition Senior Project Manager of NRDC China, emphasized that more peak-shaving solutions are needed as renewables are increasingly brought online, such as coal power flexibility retrofit, battery storage, and optimizing the regional power grid to allow a more coordinated approach across provinces to meet peak load. Researchers from NRDC’s partners, such as the Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning and Jipeng Green Development Research Institute, also joined the conference to share insights from their work in Shanxi and Inner Mongolia.
