To promote discussion and explore possible solutions for new emerging issues in climate governance, including new quality productive forces and digital innovation, NRDC co-organized a workshop with the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy (PRCEE) under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Experts from the National Development and Reform Commission, Development Research Center of the State Council, China Electricity Council, China Energy Research Society, along with representatives from businesses and NGOs, participated in the discussion.

The participating experts agreed that green and low-carbon transition is an important feature of New Quality Productive Forces, a new concept put forward by the government early this year, which has an emphasis on efficient utilization of resources and environmental sustainability. Digital technology, especially big data and AI, is becoming an important tool for improving environmental governance efficiency, and traditional industries can also leverage the power of digital innovation to achieve a green and low-carbon transition. On the other hand, however, the high energy consumption associated with digitalization cannot be overlooked. The experts advocated for a balanced development between digitalization and greening.
