NRDC, partnering with the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences (CSES) and National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC), held the 2023 Green Transition and High-Quality Development International Workshop in Beijing and online on November 15, sharing insights from Chinese and international policymakers and experts on experiences and solutions for low-carbon energy transition in power and industry, and on new drivers for green economic development and innovation.
Liu Shijin, Former Deputy Director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, pointed out that China has competive edge on low-carbon technology development and supply change resilience, which places the country in a good position to take lead in global green transition. Wang Zhixuan, Vice Chairman of the Expert Committee of China Electricity Council, emphasized that the New Power System sits in the center of the New Energy System of China and that carbon reduction is a key task of the the power industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Yannick Monschauer, Energy Analyst of IEA, noted that IEA expects coal to peak globally in the next few years and called for 3x RE and doubling energy efficiency.
Leading experts, including in energy and environment were invited to join three panel discussions to share their views on coal reduction and energy transition from three key perspectives: power sector transition, industry decarbonization, and new drivers for green development. Over 2,000 industry audience joined the workshop online or in person.
