Field learning at Xishan Forest Farm @Du Yuchen

NRDC organized a 4-day training on biodiversity and climate friendly community building for a team of forest workers and managers from Maixiu Forest Farm in Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai. The training is part of the research and capacity-building project on ecological and climate-friendly community conducted by NRDC in collaboration with Beijing Forestry University and Maixiu Forest Farm in Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

The training included theory lectures by experts from NRDC and Beijing Forestry University on such topics as forest carbon sequestration and the gateway communities construction for national parks. At the training, NRDC experts introduced the best practices at home and abroad, including the case studies in Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park in China, North York Moors National Park in the UK and Lanín National Park in Argentina. The trainee also watched an award-winning NRDC documentary “Wild Things”. The documentary is about ranchers in the US who have found that using guard dogs, electric fences, and other techniques is a better path than always picking up a gun or setting a trap line. Communities in Huangnan Tibetan Areas face similar human-wildlife conflicts. The forest workers are also increasingly using new technology and old methods of animal husbandry to coexist with carnivores.

The training aims to support the trainees in learning relevant theories and best practices on building biodiversity and climate-friendly communities, enhancing their co-management capabilities and technical skills.
