Advancing Policy Recommendations for Battery Recycling

2013-12-11

On December 11, NRDC and PRCEE jointly hosted a media seminar on lead-acid battery recycling and released a report on the current situation in China to guide policy recommendations. In China, only about 30% of lead acid batteries are recycled in a legal and safe way, compared to over 95% in many developed countries. This poor performance is a significant source of lead pollution in China. More than 50 people attended the meeting, including all stakeholders of the battery recycling chain: manufacturers, government, industrial associations, research institutes and NGOs; and over 30 media outlets covered the event, including China Daily, Economic Observer, Xinhua and Sina. The event helped raise public awareness of the issue and hopefully set the stage for piloting the reform recommendations next year.
