U.S. and Chinese Experts Share Experiences in Environmental Laws and Public Participation

2014-11-01

In November, 2014, NRDC invited three experts from our U.S. office and the American College of Environmental Lawyers (ACOEL) to share environmental law experiences with Chinese officials, scholars, lawyers, and judges. Representatives from local environmental NGOs discussed the on-going Chinese Air Law amendments and enforcement of the new Environmental Protection Law with them. In turn, the U.S. experts shared their experiences in EIA regulations and implementation at a workshop for Chinese scholars and officials. At the 16th Annual Training for Judges and Lawyers in Beijing, U.S. experts presented on citizen suits, evidence and expert witnesses, and natural resource damage assessments. At these meetings, Chinese stakeholders learned from international experiences and found the exercises incredibly useful. We hope to continue cooperating with local partners to facilitate the sharing of international best practices in environmental law and regulations enforcement.
