NRDC continued its efforts to enhance the enforcement of the new Environmental Protection Law (EPL). In August, NRDC and the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE) jointly released the 6th Pollution Information Transparency Index (PITI) annual report to evaluate Chinese city governments’ transparency in providing pollution and other environmental information to the public. We found that an increasing number of cities’ Environmental Protection Bureaus are using social media to release information and engage the general public: of the 120 cities evaluated, 54% have scored higher than in the previous year. In addition to supporting local environmental NGOs, we also worked with our partner the Center for Legal Assistance Pollution Victims (CLAPV), to train over 100 local judges working in the environmental and ecological tribunals in Fujian Province.
