To help expand the development of Chinese renewable energy projects overseas, NRDC, as part of the "Belt and Road Green Development Cooperation Partnership" platform convened the "Belt and Road Renewable Energy Development Forum" on June 5, 2017. The forum was co-organized with the China New Energy International Alliance, with the support of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and National Energy Administration (NEA). Representatives from government, wind and solar companies, financial institutions, and research institutes discussed the challenges to expand Chinese renewable energy projects overseas, including high capital costs, regional and political risks, and promoting recognition of Chinese renewable energy technology and equipment standards. Participants in the forum stressed the need for greater policy and financial support, and expressed a hope that renewable energy could become a strategic industry and symbol for China's Belt and Road Initiative. With over thirty organizations and institutions represented, the forum succeeded in identifying key challenges for China's overseas renewable energy industry, gathering policy recommendations and pointing out areas for future research by platform partners.
