The Third Walkability Report Released - How “Points of Interest” Promote Street Walkability

2017-12-16

As part of our work to promote low-carbon urbanization, NRDC collaborated with Dr. Long Ying's team at Tsinghua University's School of Architecture and released the third Chinese Cities’ Walkability Report to evaluate street walkability in 287 Chinese cities in December 2017. The past two walkability reports examined pedestrian-friendliness by scoring individual cities, however, the researchers of this report developed a walkability index based on the number and variety of points of interest on individual streets (similar to Walk Score), with the aim of providing helpful analysis and recommendations to local policy makers. The report also looks at the walkability evaluation through the lens of "Smart Growth", an urban planning theory that addresses urban sprawl. Cities built in accordance with "Smart Growth" have clear urban growth boundaries, mixed land use, and transit-oriented development, resulting in higher walk scores. The report release was covered by many media outlets, including The Paper (China's top digital news media outlet), CGTN , and Beijing Transportation Committee's Weibo and Weixin outlets, which reached over 5 million followers. Through the continuous assessment of China's walkability, we aim to promote public awareness on low-carbon development and non-motorized forms of transportation in China.
