NRDC and the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University jointly released"Walkability of Chinese Cities - Evaluating Live-Work-Play Centers" on May 14. This report was the fourth in a series of NRDC walkability evaluations. Through the evaluation of 12,740 streets in 71 live-work-play (LWP) areas of 50 cities using 9 indicators such as pedestrian crossings and street trees, the report identified streets with most urgent needs of improvement and proposed policy recommendations. The event saw an intensive discussion from four panelists: Qiu Aijun, Deputy Director of the China National Development and Reform Commission’s China Center for Urban Development; Li Dihua, Associate Professor and Vice-Dean of Peking University’s College of Architecture and Landscape; Gai Chunying, Chief Engineer of the Transportation Planning Department in the Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design; and Long Ying, co-author of the report, Associate Professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Architecture. The report received extensive media coverage, including from the People’s Daily, China Daily, Southern Weekly, Southern Metropolis Daily, National Business News, Economic Observer etc. In the days following the release, the topic “Chinese Cities Rated for Walkability” gained nearly 8 million page views on Weibo, renewing broader public attention and inspiring debate on urban walkability.
