António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations sent a video welcome to the 7th Annual China Coal Consumption Cap and Energy Transition International Workshop @NRDC

On November 24, the Seventh Annual China Coal Consumption Cap and Energy Transition International Workshop, co-sponsored by the China Energy Conservation Association and NRDC, co-organized by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and the Energy Foundation (EF), was held in Beijing. The theme of the conference was “Recommendations for China’s 14th Five Year Plan (FYP): Continue to Implement Mandatory Coal Control Targets.” António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Gina McCarthy, the President of NRDC, sent video welcomes to the conference. Experts at the conference recommended that, during the 14th FYP period, China should continue to implement two mandatory coal cap targets: reducing the share of coal in total primary energy consumption to less than 50% by 2025 and reducing the average coal consumption per kWh of coal power supplied to 298 grams coal equivalent per kWh. These targets are necessary in order to curb the rebound of coal consumption, strengthen coal reduction and substitution, and encourage cleaner and efficient coal use. More than 400 representatives from central and local governments, domestic and foreign research institutions, enterprises, and environmental organizations attended the meeting either in-person or online.
