Chinese Textile Industry Gets Big Savings with Clean by Design: An Innovative Approach to Green Supply Chain Management

2017-06-20

Global apparel brands and retailers, Chinese textile mills, and partners from the International Finance Corporation and Sustainable Apparel Coalition gathered in Shanghai on June 20 for an awards ceremony, hosted by NRDC, to celebrate the achievements of our Clean by Design (CBD) initiative in 2016. 23 Chinese textile mills, many of which provide fabric for apparel brands and retailers such as Target, Gap, Levi's, Walmart, New Balance, Inditex, JCPenney, Ann Inc., Li & Fung and Disney., participated in CBD in 2016 and achieved more than $8 million dollars in savings annually by implementing efficiency improvements, according to CBD's report. These improvements have dramatically reduced the pollution generated by these mills, saving 4 million tons of water and more than 30,000 tons of coal per year. CBD (Clean By Design) is an innovative global model for "Green Supply Chain" programs, led by NRDC, that calls upon multinational apparel retailers and fashion brands to take responsibility for the environmental impacts of their factories abroad. The excellent results of the 2016 program demonstrate that the CBD approach continues to deliver high levels of environmental improvement at participating mills. And these results can be achieved through a more scalable, "low-touch" model of assistance that focuses on building technical capacity to motivated mills, providing targeted expert advice and utilizing strong encouragement from multinational business partners.
