China Oil Consumption Scenario Analysis Workshop

2018-06-27

In response to the continued growth of oil consumption in China, the world’s second largest oil-consuming country, the China Oil Cap Project was launched in early 2018, with NRDC and EF China as the coordinating NGOs. At its first half-year mark, the China Oil Cap Project held an oil consumption scenario analysis workshop in Beijing on June 27 to discuss domestic and international oil trends, and to lay out trajectories for China’s oil consumption to peak and to be reduced. Experts from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, International Energy Agency, and British Petroleum shared their experiences with the scenario analysis projects and their key findings, which will contribute to the ongoing research of China’s oil consumption scenarios, one of the fundamental research outcomes of the Project. Experts from China Automotive Technology and Research Center, Sinopec Economic and Development Research Institute, and think tanks under China’s National Development and Reform Commission shared their analysis and insights regarding the transportation and petrochemical sectors that dominate oil consumption. Mr. Chengyu Fu, former chairman of SINOPEC and the head of the Project Research Advisory Committee, emphasized that the goal of the research project is to help China peak and reduce oil consumption as early as possible to protect the environment, to accelerate the low-carbon energy transition, and to ensure energy security. Dr. Fuqiang Yang of NRDC introduced the project work plan and announced that the Project will publish a report analyzing China oil consumption scenarios at the beginning of 2019.
