The buildings sector is critical in low-carbon urban development. In China, building heating, air conditioning, lighting, etc. make up nearly a quarter of the country’s energy consumption, and this proportion is still growing. China has both the world’s largest new construction market and existing stock market. Its current total floor area is close to that of North America and Western Europe combined, and more than two-thirds of existing buildings are energy-inefficient with huge potential further carbon emission reductions. NRDC is the first international environmental organization to carry out green building projects in China. It cooperates with key departments in central and local governments to promote the development of green buildings in cities across the country. NRDC works to formulate and implement building energy-efficiency standards and incentives, conducts demonstration projects, and scale-up energy-efficiency renovations of existing buildings, contributing to a more holistic urban renewal.
