Researchers at Tsinghua University evaluated mercury air emissions associated with waste management at China’s zinc smelters. Using a case study of a typical large facility, the researchers sampled the various waste streams, investigated the waste management practices associated with the wastes, and then estimated national air emissions resulting from such practices. As indicated in the report, waste management resulted in larger emissions than zinc production (smelting), therefore the authors recommended ways of reducing these emissions for consideration as China begins to implement its obligations under the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
