This report is a collaborative effort between NRDC and the School of Economics & Management Beijing Forestry University. The national park system is the core of China's nature reserve system. The key task of national parks and relevant system development is to address the challenges in existing systems and mechanisms, provide institutional guarantees for the effective operation of the nature reserve system, and promote the synergy between the ecological protection and community development. The realization of ecological product value serves as an important means to promote the conservation and rational utilization of natural resources. It can generate fundings for regional ecological protection and provide support to both conservation and community development.
Taking the Hunchun area of the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park as an example, the report presents four ways to realize the value of ecological products: ecological industry, ecological compensation, ecological initiative, and ecological premium via multi-stakeholder engagement. The report identifies the challenges in realizing the value of ecological products in the region and provides recommendations, including realization pathways, innovative mechanisms, and the establishment of a sound supervision and evaluation system. The report aims to provide a reference for the realization of ecological product value and community co-construction models in the region, as well as a case studies for the coordinated development of nature reserves and communities in China.
