Gateway of the Giant Panda National Park in Sichuan Province @Hua Ning
A National Park Gateway Community Construction Seminar was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, by NRDC and the National Park Research Institute of National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NPRI), which is in charge of the country’s national park management. Park managers from Sichuan Giant Panda National Park, Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, and Wuyi Mountain National Park attended the seminar. These four national parks are among the initial five national parks established in China. Representatives from Yingjing County, a gateway community at the Giant Panda National Park, and park and urban planning research institutes in Sichuan provinice were also invited to the seminar. Experts reviewed the international experience in the design and construction of national park gateway communities. Using the construction of the pilot gateway community in Yingjing County as an example, the participants discussed what principles and elements need to be included by the "Guideline for the Construction of National Park Gateway Community", a research deliverable by NRDC and NPRI. This guideline aims to provide recommendations on principles and standards for gateway community construction and to ensure the biodiversity and ecosystem connectivity, as well as the well-being of local communities.
