On May 27, 2014, we hosted a workshop with the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) on the evaluation of risks posed by lead contaminated sites. More than 50 key stakeholders from all over the country attended the workshop, including officials from national and local environmental protection and health departments, and researchers from academic institutions and NGOs. We invited top experts from the U.S. to share their experience with a particular model of risk evaluation. Participants at the workshop expressed great interest in the use of this model and discussed technical issues with adapting the model to China. The model is expected to expedite the cleanup of China’s hundreds of contaminated sites and thereby minimize children's exposure to lead in nearby communities.
