On October 30, 2013, NRDC held the kickoff meeting for the China Coal Cap Plan and Policy Research Project. Initiated by NRDC, the Coal Cap Project will work with government research institutes, universities and industry associations to develop a comprehensive plan to peak China's coal consumption by 2020. The project will highlight, as quantitatively as possible, the climate, air, health and economic benefits of reducing coal consumption and chart a roadmap for an early peak. About 100 Chinese research partners and experts participated in the event and discussed how the project should be coordinated, challenges to be addressed, and the urgency of developing a coal cap policy for China's next five year plan in 2016.
