NRDC held the fourth Research Steering Committee meeting of the China Coal Cap Project on June 30, 2014. The project aims to develop a national plan to peak coal consumption in China by 2020 and fulfill China's environmental, climate and sustainable development goals. At the meeting, researchers from the Energy Research Institute presented updated national, sectoral and provincial level analyses of coal consumption from the present through 2050, and Research Steering Committee members provided recommendations for strengthening the analysis. The next step will be to more clearly analyze the effect of air pollution, public health and water resource constraints on setting coal consumption cap targets. These issues will be further discussed at the Policy Steering Committee meeting on July 30, 2014.
