In November of 2019, the China Coal Cap Project hosted three events focusing on reducing China’s coal consumption. The Sixth Annual China Coal Consumption Cap and Energy Transition International Workshop held on November 14 brought together Chinese and international experts to share the progress and challenges in implementing a coal cap in Shandong Province, Shanxi Province, and the Central and Fenwei Plains region, as well as to provide examples of international experiences in coal transition. These areas are some of China’s largest coal producers and consumers, and they are also some of the country’s most polluted regions. The project also held a workshop on China’s Macroeconomic Outlook during the 14th Five-Year Plan on November 26, to kick off its coal cap research for the 14th Five-Year Plan, taking both economic growth and environmental protection goals into consideration. On November 28, the project hosted a salon on China’s Coal Power Development Path during the 14th Five-Year Plan to emphasize the necessity of capping China’s coal power capacity at around 1100-1150 GW in order to avoid the high risks of stranded coal power assets and achieve a rapid energy transition to clean energy.
