People’s Daily coverage on reducing oil consumption in order to make the skies blue.
On March 17, 2020, People’s Daily Overseas Edition Newspaper had a full page feature on reducing oil consumption in China. The article highlighted the fact that developed countries have already experienced a long-term carbon lock-in through oil consumption and dependence, and pointed out the importance of avoiding such pathways when China is transitioning from high-speed growth to high-quality growth. Research findings from the China Oil Cap Project were highlighted, including policy recommendations to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles and to reduce unsustainable use of plastics. People’s Daily also published Dr. Yang Fuqiang’s op-ed, in which he points out that capping China’s oil consumption is not only beneficial for the country in addressing climate change and achieving energy security, but also provides a new impetus for China’s economic growth.
