Establishing Stakeholders Network to Advocate for a Low-Carbon Consumption Lifestyle

2020-12-22

Green low-carbon consumption is increasingly becoming a critical component in meeting China’s new climate target. On December 22, NRDC co-organized a workshop on green low-carbon consumption together with Energy Foundation China and other partners. The workshop aimed to establish a broad stakeholder network to catalyze and scale up a quick transition to a low-carbon life style and substantively support the goal of going carbon neutral by 2060. Online shopping and logistics giant JD, food delivery giant Meituan, and ride-hailing giant DIDI presented their strategies and achievements to date.  City-level representatives from Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu shared the current efforts and future plans. By the end of 2019, the resident population of the  four cities is nearly 80 million. The workshop also brought together experts from government affiliated institutes such as Center for Environmental Education and Communications of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, as well as universities like Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development, Tsinghua University. The workshop launched an initiative to establish a platform for low-carbon lifestyle advocacy. The platform, consisting of experts from industry leaders, NGOs, and city governments, is devoted to integrating current initiatives and to scale up personal carbon savings.
