Engaging Local Communities in the Management of the Tiger & Leopard National Park

2021-05-17

Community participation in national park management and the sustainable transformation of high-impact livelihoods are key to the success of national park development. On May 17, NRDC jointly organized a community participatory roundtable with one of the branch bureaus of China’s Tiger and Leopard National Park and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Over 20 villagers and policy makers from the park administration and its local branch attended the roundtable. The participants discussed how government can better empower and engage local communities in the management of the national park through participatory community land use planning and anti-poaching patrols. NRDC and WCS also introduced a project plan to the participating policy makers that the two organizations had developed for village-level co-management.  After the meeting, a community co-management team of 6 villager representatives was officially set up to perform management tasks like anti-poaching patrols. This roundtable marks the start of NRDC’s second phase of research on eco-friendly community transformation in the park.
