China’s 14th Five-Year Plan highlights the importance of employing digital technology and big data to promote ecological progress. This applies to fisheries governance reform as well. To support the development of a timely, efficient, and reliable electronic catch monitoring system for China’s fishery output control scheme, NRDC and the Zhejiang Marine Fisheries Research Institute co-organized an international workshop on electronic reporting and monitoring in fisheries management. Over 90 participants attended the workshop, including officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, provincial fishery departments, enforcement officers, experts, fishery cooperative and NGO representatives, and international experts. NRDC released its new report, “Electronic Reporting in Fisheries”, at the workshop for policy makers’ reference. The report covers fishery electronic reporting policies and practices of Canada, New Zealand, the United States, and the parties to the Nauru Agreement,and summarizes their experience and lessons. Officials from the Ministry spoke highly of NRDC’s work and emphasized that the government attaches great importance to the research and application of digital technology in fisheries.
