NRDC jointly organized a Marine Protected Area (MPA) Management and Networking Workshop in collaboration with the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) and its China PEMSEA Center during CBD COP15. Participants discussed MPA management experiences and challenges, including improving management capabilities, applying spatial planning tools, and establishing partnerships and cooperation between and among MPAs. In addition, the unique role of local communities in conservation work was highlighted during the discussion. Experts from the U.S., South Korea, and the Philippines provided suggestions for the high-quality development of China's MPAs. Other participants included representatives from both domestic and regional marine and fishery management administrations, institutes, and NGOs. The workshop was one of the pre-congress meetings convened ahead of the 2021 East Asian Seas Congress that will be hosted by the PEMSEA and the Cambodian government in December. The summary of this workshop will be submitted to the East Asian Seas Congress.
