On December 28, NRDC and the Energy Research Institute of Peking University held a webinar to release a joint report entitled Coal Power Transition Pathways for Key Chinese Provinces. The power sector is the single largest source of carbon emission in China. Six provinces — Shandong, Jiangsu, Jilin, Shanxi, Gansu and Hubei — were analyzed due to their role as key producers of coal power. Shandong and Jiangsu are also key consumer of coal power. The report identified pathways for optimizing existing coal power plants, and detailed policy recommendations and measures tailored to each province were presented at the webinar. For example, Shanxi is advised to maximize its clean energy resources, namely as solar and wind, while Shandong should leverage energy efficiency improvements to reduce power demand. Yang Fuqiang, Senior Researcher at Peking University, Professor Yuan Jiahai from North China Electric Power University, and industry experts from Shanxi, Shandong, and Jiangsu shared their insights into coal power reduction at the provincial level.
