The workshop @NRDC
Shandong province has the largest coal power capacity in China, constituting 9.5% of the nation’s coal power capacity, and its power sector emits more than 44% of the province’s carbon emissions. Thus, the low carbon transition of the power sector in Shandong is critical for the province to achieve the Dual Carbon goals. On August 26, NRDC partnered with the Institute of Energy at Peking University to launch Research on the Pathways for Power Sector Transition in Shandong under the Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Goals. The research forecasts the province’s power sector to peak its carbon emissions during 14th FYP period and recommends the industry to adopt a “clean energy scenario” pathway-significantly increasing non-fossil generation compared to the “business-as-usual scenario”-to ensure the province reaches carbon neutrality by 2060. To help achieve the Dual Carbon goals, the research recommends that the province’s coal power capacity does not exceed 108 GW.
Industry experts and journalists joined the workshop and report release onsite and online, including the head of the Shandong Province Electric Power Enterprises Association, the deputy head of the Economy and Technology Research Institute of the State Grid Shandong office and researchers from the Ecology Institute of the Shandong Academy of Science and Peking University. Key findings were covered by top-tier media, including China Industry News and Southern Metropolis Daily.
