The increasing emphasis on energy security has raised concerns over the safe and reliable operation of China’s power system at increasing shares of renewable energy, which in turn, has called into question the speed and scale of the power industry decarbonization efforts. To address these concerns, NRDC, in partnership with the China Electricity Council and China Energy Research Society, held a high-level China Power Sector Low-Carbon Transition Forum on August 2. The event drew over thirty key power industry representatives to participate in person, and 1400+ livestreaming views. Senior experts from power generation companies and grid companies, as well as representatives from government affiliated-think tanks and power system planning institutes, shared their views. Speakers emphasized that energy transition is not a barrier to energy security but is in fact another way to secure energy supply. Experts identified enhancing flexibility in a safe and economical way as the key to building a new power system, as well as called attention to the important role that demand-side resources will play in the future. Additionally, we released our report, Research on the Construction of a New Power System, which proposes the pathways toward China's power sector decarbonization under different scenarios. The forum and the experts’ views were reported by major Chinese media, including Caixin, China Industry News and National Business Daily.
