China is conducting a modern fisheries management reform, spearheaded by introducing and scaling up Total Allowable Catch (TAC) system. China’s biggest fishing province, Zhejiang, continues to lead national reform through expanding TAC pilots from single species to all fisheries in a few selected key fishing counties. The Zhejiang Provincial Fisheries Department organized a training session in one of the pilot counties, Yuhuan, in mid-September. NRDC was invited as the only international consultant to give lectures at the training, introducing international experience in promoting the TAC system, case studies as well as lessons learned. Participants include provincial and county level officials, scientists, fishermen and cooperative managers. The Zhejiang Provincial Fishery Department has invited NRDC to provide future trainings to more counties and to help review and improve the pilot plans.
