NRDC launched a workshop series with the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University to discuss strategies and policies to guarantee low-carbon power supply under the Dual Carbon Goals on December 8. As the first in the series, the workshop focused on renewable energy development and the re-positioning of coal power. Hosted by Dr. Lin Boqiang at Xiamen University, a well-known energy expert in China, the discussion included commentary from some of the best industry experts, including Chen Zongfa (member of the committee at the China Energy Research Society and Deputy Chief Accountant at China Huadian Corporation), Zhang Xiliang (Director of the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy at Tsinghua University), Zheng Xinye (Director of the School of Applied Sciences at Renmin University of China), and Dai Yande (Director of the energy and economy committee at China Energy Research Society). Zhang Xiliang pointed out that the power industry will need to peak carbon emission soon after 2025 to ensure the realization of the 2030 carbon peaking goal. Zheng Xinye emphasized that the electricity price will have to be adjusted considering the system cost and grid cost to integrate high percentage of renewables. According to Dai Yande, the energy efficiency will need to triple the current level for the 2060 carbon neutral goal. The workshop attracted an online audience of over 3,000 and was covered by key industry media such as Southern Metropolis Daily, China Electric Power News (print media), and Polaris Electric Power.
