This report studies the positioning and pathway of transition and development of Shanxi’s coking industry in the context of carbon neutrality from the perspective of the industrial chain. The report concludes that the carbon emissions of the coking industry in Shanxi Province will be at the peak plateau during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, and will gradually decline during and after the 15th Five-Year Plan period. With downstream demand shrinking, the coke industry will be in recession after 2028, leading to a situation where overcapacity will expand and the risk of stranded assets will be higher. The report recommends the establishment of a flexible control mechanism for coke production, and the exploration of the mechanism for companies to transit away from coal.
