Calling on Government to Reduce Mercury Pollution in Light of Minamata Convention

2013-09-11

On September 11, 2013, NRDC and a local NGO, Global Village of Beijing, jointly held a seminar on the Minamata Convention and China's mercury control policies. Experts at the seminar identified priorities for China and key actions that can be accomplished by 2015, including presentations from NRDC, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), and Beijing Normal University. Priority actions are to ban mercury exports (except for environmentally safe disposal), to develop a source control strategy, to ensure every lead and zinc smelter complies with 2010 emission standards, and to issue emission standards for coal-fired industrial boilers, municipal waste incinerators and cement production. The seminar generated coverage from a dozen of media outlets including Xinhua News Agency and China Daily.
