On February 10, 2015, NRDC submitted comments to the MEP on the draft proposals for the Environmental Quality Standard for Soil (1995) revisions. We emphasized setting a lead limit for unpaved residential areas, which will affect the exposure to lead for many people, especially children. These comments were developed by investigating background information on residential soil standards in other countries including the U.S., Australia and Canada, and researching the latest science. NRDC also conducted outreach with a number of Chinese research institutes including the Department of Soil Pollution Control of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), which subsequently submitted a recommendation to the MEP on lead soil standards for residential unpaved areas.
