In February, NRDC held an expert meeting on the dispersed coal project. The project aims to develop an economically sustainable, socially inclusive system of governance for rural coal in Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei Province, which has 6 of the 10 most polluted Chinese cities. Representatives from China University of Political Science and Law, Ma Beizhan Law Firm, and Environmental and Social Governance Research Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection presented their experiences with air pollution policy development, while NRDC shared the major findings of our dispersed coal research report, the first comprehensive study of its kind. In partnership with these experts, NRDC plans to host a roundtable discussion in May that convenes local government officials, business owners, NGOs, and residents of Shijiazhuang, to encourage open dialogue and public participation for more effective coal reduction and replacement.
