Barbara Finamore, Asia Senior Strategic Director at NRDC, commented on China’s Efforts to Beat Air Pollution in a promotional video for World Environment Day celebrations hosted by UNEP and China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) on June 5 in Hangzhou, China. China’s approaches to beat air pollution include strengthening environmental laws, reducing coal consumption, rapid deployment of electric vehicles, reducing pollution in its ports and promoting wide-spread energy efficiency. When Barbara first began NRDC’s work on energy efficiency in China in the 1990s, few people had heard of the concept. But today, according to International Energy Agency, China is a global energy efficiency heavyweight, leading the world on this important issue. Government policies have been fundamental to its success. This work not only reduces air pollution, but also helps fight climate change. It is not only good for China, but good for the world. China is setting a positive example for other countries that you can protect the environment while continuing to grow your economy.
