More than 4,000 small and medium-sized banks in China play an important role in local financial markets, providing pertinent and convenient financial services to private business, micro-enterprise, agriculture and rural areas. In order to enhance their green finance business capabilities, NRDC and CIB Research organized the "Forum on Green Finance Capacity Building of Small and Medium-sized Banks", with support from the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) and the China Banking Association (CBA). CIB Research is the research arm of China Industrial Bank (CIB), the first bank working on green finance in China. More than 70 representatives from the CBIRC, the CBA, banks and other institutions participated in the forum. A senior expert from the Policy Research Bureau of the CBIRC highly affirmed the significance of green finance capacity building for small and medium-sized banks and emphasized that tackling climate change and climate risks should be included into the decision-making process. Lu Zhengwei, Chief Economist of CIB presented his analysis of a bright prospect of green finance market. Representatives from twelve financial institutions, including Industrial Bank, Bank of Jiangsu, Bank of Nanjing, and Bank of Huzhou, shared their experiences, models and tools, and methods for green finance practices from different perspectives. NRDC also shared two relevant research reports during the training: "Practice and Prospects of Green Consumer Credit in China: Findings and Recommendations" and "Report on the Development of Green Retail Banking in China".
