On September 21, 2016, NRDC together with seven Chinese and international organizations launched a joint project to help strengthen China’s green leadership in implementing the “the Belt and Road” Initiative. Over 200 participants from government, industry, NGOs, and the media attended our kick-off workshop in Beijing. Chinese experts from the State Council Research Institute, National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP)’s Academies of Environmental Sciences and Planning, MEP’s Environmental Impact Assessment Center, and China Banking Regulatory Commission gave insightful presentations and discussed how China can play a leadership role in developing green growth and low-carbon projects through the development of guidelines, green finance and investment, and environmental standards. In the afternoon, we held closed-door dialogues among the participating organizations to discuss plans for future research.
