NRDC organized the Fenwei Plain Climate and Environmental Governance Roundtable on November 25 in partnership with the China University of Political Science and Law. About 90 participants attended the hybrid roundtable. The Fenwei Plain includes parts of Shanxi and Shannxi, two of China’s biggest coal-producing and consuming provinces. Both provinces face challenges as well as opportunities for environmental protection on their way to achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals in the fields of energy and economic development .
Policy makers from the Shanxi Province Development and Reform Commission and the Shanxi Bureau of Ecology and Environment, judges, prosecutors, and legal experts, as well as experts from the Chinese Social Academy, financial research institutes and NGOs exchanged ideas and suggestions on key subjects including coal reduction, control of high pollution and energy consumption industries, renewable energy development, a coordinated legal system for reduction of pollution and carbon emissions, and financial approaches to boost the green and just transition.
