To promote clean vehicles and a clean power system in China, NRDC released a joint report, The Economics and Application Potential of Electric Vehicles in Energy Storage Technologies, together with the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission and China Energy Storage Alliance on February 7. The study finds significant economic potential for EVs to provide energy storage capability and support renewable integration at scale. At the report release, experts from the State Grid of China, Chinese Academy of Science and Energy Foundation China were invited to share their insights on policies, business models, technologies and market mechanisms that are needed to realize this potential. The event was covered by several major media outlets including The Paper, China Reform Daily, and China Automotive News, among others.

Separately, Hyoungmi Kim, the project lead for NRDC’s EV work in China, presented at the Nordic EV Summit in Oslo, where she shared China’s experience as well as opportunities and gaps for promoting EVs and charging infrastructure and realizing the added-values of EVs to the grid system in China. China has the world’s fastest growing EV market: approximately 770,000 electric vehicles were sold in China in 2017, which accounts for more than 50% of sales worldwide in the same year.
