2018-09-20

On September 20th, NRDC, along with Tongji University and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), held a workshop in Shanghai to discuss how to transform streets to improve pedestrian friendliness. The workshop invited Janette Sadik-Khan, former commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation and Dr. Zhiqiang Wu, Vice President of Tongji University, to give keynote speeches. Sadik-Khan presented stories about her fight to change New York City’s streets into livable, people-oriented models and shared her book Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution. Dr. Wu shared his experience working as the lead planner for major projects that have shaped Shanghai into the city we see today. NRDC also invited experts from the Shanghai Transport & Port Research Center, Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, and Shanghai Changning District Low Carbon Project Management and Development Center to share different perspectives on low carbon transportation with experts from NRDC and ITDP. Over 50 urban planning professionals, officials and media representatives attended this workshop and engaged in discussions with the experts.
